Training Your Terrier
It is a must to train your terrier if you want it to follow the right rules in the house.
The idea that training a dog is a hard and expensive task is incorrect. The owners themselves can train their dogs. You could, however, seek professional help to train your dog completely.
An obedient dog is normally very happy on its back in your arms, it puts its tail down and crouches, avoids direct eye contact and rolls on its back whereas a bold dog is possessive of its belongings, has eye contact, hates to be petted and does not like to be groomed. It is overprotective of its belongings and does not move from where it is sitting on the sofa.
Terriers should be trained with compassion and constancy. They are encouraged by praises and rewards, but become ruthless and cold to punishments.
Terrier pups should be given training sessions which exist in most of the dog training schools. They are given obedience classes and also taught to get used to other dogs and people around them. However, prescribed training is conducted only when the pup is at least six months old. A terrier can be trained at any age provided the breeder is ready and there is a good trainer available.
One of the methods of training a terrier is by repetition wherein it is asked to repeat a task until it becomes skilled in that particular task. Training a dog requires a lot of patience and perseverance from the breeder as well as the trainer. If a dog does not do the right thing, you should correct it with words which in turn correct the dog"s actions. Give it a piece of cheese or any pet food when it has performed correctly to the command given by you. When your pet treasures you and carries out your commands, rewards will no longer be needed.
If you are interested in training your terrier yourself, then spend a lot of time grooming it, train it regularly on the leash, roll it on its back and feed it food so that it knows that it is getting its treat.
One has to be strict and firm while training a dog. Later on, you can be your pet"s best friend.
