Bull Dog Terriers And What People Think Of Them

There are some reservations about the name "bull dog" and people wonder how the name actually came about. The story goes that long ago bull and dog fights were a popular sports activity among the Americans and the British. Since the only way to kill the bull was to bite the neck and hang on the dog was required to have very strong jaws. For this reason pit bulls were a popular choice of dog. In those days pit bulls came in many varieties withy many different characteristics and one could select as per choice. This also lent a very interesting angle to the sport. As time went by the fights came down to being between the pit bulls themselves and the bulls were phased out. The bull dog of today is a descendant of those pit bull terriers.

One of the most noteworthy of bull dog terrier is the American Staffordshire terrier which has garnered a lot of interest in its apparent contrasting characters. These dogs are not vicious but they do have a lot of physical strength and are very powerful. Their physical attributes are a result of their dog fighting antecedents but in relationships no dog can match its abilities. They do posses some amount of aggressiveness but this is amply compensated by their very loving personality and loyalty towards the family. This stability in their temperament makes them excellent pets and watchdogs.

Amstaf terriers are thought to be part of the pit bull family. They love challenges and are generally used in illegal dog fighting. But most of their problems stem from bad and careless training. Pit bulls tend to get treated badly by their owners and there are not many Amstaf terriers which are trained properly. Their violent nature is compounded by the bad treatment meted out to them but basically they are loving animals. They are hard working and enjoy physical exercise that will use their power to its fullest. This breed is not for the couch potato.

But the true definition of a pit bull can be quite confusing. The name pit bull brings up an image of bloody dog fights which is not completely true. Unfortunately the American Pit Bull Terrier is not recognized officially as their pure bred status is under the scanner and to be a member of the Kennel clubs the dog must be pure bred. This is rather unfortunate considering that the dog has a lot to offer if treated well.
