A Bit About Welsh Terrier Dogs

From hunting dogs, Welsh Terriers soon became show dogs and breeders vied with each other to better their coats and their color. Not that this mild mannered temperament makes them staid and boring as Welsh terriers can be fun loving and great and entertaining companions.

Considering that it belongs to the family of terriers, it is a very energetic dog though probably not as energetic as some of the other terrier breeds. So it follows that the Welsh Terrier needs its daily dose of exercise and enough of it. You will also need to ensure that he mixes well with both dogs as well as humans so you need to socialize him, starting at as early an age as possible. The Welsh terrier is usually very good with children as long as they don"t trouble him and irritate him. Helping him be friendly with adults, children and other dogs will go a long way in keeping him and you happy.

How do you train a Welsh Terrier? There are many ways to do this. Remember though that whichever way you choose, make sure that you temper firmness with gentleness. If you are patient, you can teach him many a trick, whether it is fly ball tricks, catching Frisbees or whatever. Since he does have a lot of energy, he is best kept in a yard outside where he can run around and play. He can spend hours playing catch. He is also a good jumper and you will be amazed at how high he can jump, obviously due to his long legs. Trained well, this can be extremely entertaining and amusing. There are many other tricks he can be trained to do as well. If you don"t have a yard, make sure you take him for long walks.

Grooming is important for your Welsh Terrier but it is not too tedious a chore. All you need to do is to brush him weekly so he doesn"t shed too much, with all the loose hairs gone. He can be cleaned by wiping him with a damp cloth and a bath is only required once in a way.
