Terriers are generally full of life and very active dogs and their personality is very often compared to that of an energetic child. Terriers originated from the British Isles and were trained to hunt rats, foxes, otters etc. The word "terrier" is derived from the word "terra" which means "earth".
Terriers are usually recognized by their physical features. Terriers belong to different breeds that differ from one another and further divided to smaller groups in order to identify and differentiate them better.
Show Terriers are dogs that are smaller and are commonly used for show rings.
A cross between a Bull dog and Terrier gave rise to the Bull and Terrier types and towards the end of the 1800s the distinction between Bull dogs and Terriers was made more prominent.
Terriers used for hunting were known as Hunting and Working Terriers.

Airedales are a cross breed between a Black and Tan and Otterhound Terrier, they are very good swimmers and their scent skill is very good.
The Australian Terrier is a cross breed between the forbearer of Dandie Dinmont and rough coated terrier that was brought into England. Their litters were then transferred to Australia. Australia being a county with very few dogs, the off springs was used to crossbreed and small dogs with features of terriers were the outcome. These dogs are very good watch dogs. They are 10 to 11 inches tall and have a life span of twelve to fourteen years.
The Border Terrier has a medium build which may be deceptive when you actually know how active this terrier is. They are very lively and attentive and fit into small openings when they are hunting. They are ideal pets for families because they are very loving and can be trained easily.
Bull Terriers are dogs trained for bull baiting and dog fighting. These dogs are very strong and do no feel pain easily. In the 1800s, dog fights were banned in England and breeders opted for less furious dogs.
A cross breed between the Dalmatian and English Terrier gave rise to a white specie known as "White Cavalier".
